Items you’ll need to polish a concrete floor
- Industrial grinding machine – dry upright machines are recommended.
- 30, 80, 150&400 metal-bonded diamond grit discs
- 100 to 3000 grit resin-bonded discs
- Safety goggles
- Ear defenders
- Dust protection mask
- Cement epoxy or hard drying filler
- Cement hardener
1) Buy or Visit your local hardware rental store and rent an upright, walk behind grinder.
Concrete grinders generally come in two variations, wet and dry. A dry grinder sucks the dust up
like a vacuum cleaner as you work and keeps the air clean. The wet grinder uses water to control dust
but makes the job a lot messier as you will have more cleaning afterwards.
2) Purchase a set of diamond abrasive discs to use with the grinder. The discs are numbered
with higher numbers corresponding to a finer abrasive. You will start out with a coarse abrasive
and slowly work your way up the finest grit disc to give the floor to great polished finish.
3) At all times ensure you wear your safety equipment. Goggles, ear defenders and a dust mask
are essential as the job can create a lot of dust which is harmful is ingested.
4) The first stage of the process is to use coarse diamond grit disc to remove any existing floor coatings
and prepare the surface for the later stages. At this stage you should also prep the floor by filling any cracks
or making any repairs that need to be done.
5) Begin grinding the floor by starting from one corner, slowly working your way across the entire surface.
Start with a 30 grit metal-bonded abrasive and continue with 80 metal-bonded grit. Finish the grinding process with 400 metal-bonded grit.
6) Once you have evenly ground the entire floor using the 400 metal-bonded disc, apply a chemical concrete hardener to the floor. This will help you achieve a high gloss finish to the floor.
7) Once the chemical hardener has set you will need to change discs on the grinder to use the finer grit resin-bonded discs. Polish the concrete floor starting with the 100 resin-bonded grit disc, continuing the process using 400 resin-bonded grit then 800 resin-bonded grit, until you get the desired shine. You can use up to 3,000 resin-bonded grit to get a truly perfect shine!
